Epic, episodic, tale of the lives of a small group of New York City Jewish gangsters spanning over 40 years. Told mostly in flashbacks and flash-forwards, the movie centers on small-time hood David ‘Noodles’ Aaronson (Robert De Nero) and his lifelong partners in crime; Max (James Woods), Cockeye (William Forsythe) and Patsy (James Hayden) and their friends from growing up in the rough Jewish neighborhood of New York’s Lower East Side in the 1920s, to the last years of Prohibition in the early 1930s, and then to the late 1960s where an elderly Noodles returns to New York after many years in hiding to look into the past.

In the 50’s, in Louisiana, the smart populist, manipulative and wolf hick Willie Stark is elected governor with the support of the lower social classes. On a hilly highway in the California desert are three cars and a truck. In one car are Russell Finch, his wife Emeline, and her obnoxious mother; in another car are Melville Crump and his wife Monica; in another are two pals, Dingman “Dingy” Bell and his obese friend Benjy Benjamin; and in the truck is delivery driver Leonard “Lennie” Pike. Suddenly the four vehicles are nearly struck by a wildly fleeing car that smashes through the guardrail and plummets down the embankment. The other vehicles stop and the men rush to help the injured driver, who turns out to be a wanted felon, “Smiler” Grogan, who is fatally injured and whose dying words to his would-be rescuers are an alert that a large case with hundreds of thousands of dollars is to be found buried beneath “a big W.” A detective arrives at the scene and questions the men, who all explain that they could make no sense of what Grogan was saying. But after the detective and his partner leave, the men begin wondering if Grogan’s dying words are true, and eventually a series of wild misadventures ensues as the four parties begin searching for the mysterious “big W,” find it and the treasure - and find themselves facing potential arrest at the hands of area police captain G.C. Culpepper.

In 1983, Senator Vernon Trent is running a high-profile re-election campaign. Los Angeles cop Mason Storm videotapes a meeting where Trent hires killers to kill his opponent so he won’t lose the election. When Mason’s cover is blown, he gets away temporarily, but when he calls in this information to his partner Kevin O’Malley, he is overheard by corrupt cops who work for Trent. On his way home, Mason stops at a liquor store to pick up some champagne to celebrate his undercover coup with his wife Felicia and his 5-year-old son Sonny. 5 thugs come into the store with guns and blow away the cashier, and Mason kills the thugs. At home, Mason tucks Sonny in, and Mason and Felicia open the champagne. The corrupt cops who overheard Storm’s call to Kevin go to Storm’s house and start firing their guns. Felicia is killed, and Sonny is missing and presumed dead. Mason himself, declared dead at the hospital, revives only to remain in a coma. Kevin enlists the help of a doctor to keep Mason’s survival a secret until he can recuperate and give information on his assailants. 7 years later, in 1990, Kevin has been forced off the LAPD, with Trent and his men now running the show. Mason is in a coma center under the alias of “John Doe,” and he’s being cared for by nurse Andrea “Andy” Stewart. Mason wakes up from his 7 year coma, and takes some time to recover. After recovering, Mason is reunited with Sonny, who is now 12-years-old, and Mason plans his revenge on Trent.

In tone with the early “Batman: Year One” style comics. As a boy a young Bruce Wayne watched in horror as his millionaire parents were slain in front of his eyes, a trauma which led him to become obsessed with revenge but his chance is cruelly taken away from him by fate.
